A protector is a headmate who protects the system, or other more vulnerable headmates within the system, from internal and/or external threats. This protection might for example be accomplished overtly by providing a felt sense of a source of self-love or inner strength, or covertly by maintaining partitions to hide vulnerable headmates away from persecutors and/or the host.
