A big is a headmate whose felt sense of mental age is in an adult range—especially as opposed to littles and/or middles existing in the same system, toward whom bigs might be protective.
In some systems—probably most—there are no big selves who are older than the body, and if any bigs at all are older than the body, they are introjects. However, this rule does not apply to at least a large minority of systems.
