This mine shaft can be used as a nexus to access several other locations in headspace, but it's subject to a supernatural mandatory curfew. Anyone still in a world they reached from the mine shaft once the mineshaft closes up for the night will be trapped forever in the world they reached.
Sophie and Kate apparently dug down through this place to bury the corpse of Singer in Hell, if I'm correctly interpreting the dream that happened in. The news station in the mannequin city reported on the excursion.
I believe the mine shaft may be symbolic of the redshift phenomenon, and by extension of headspace as a whole.
