Type of term Possible function of a system
Synonyms or near-synonyms Blackout, grayout
Antonyms or near-antonyms Cofronting, frontstuck

Switching occurs when one headmate in a system stops fronting and another starts fronting at the same time, “taking over” for them. It may be voluntary or involuntary. A blackout or grayout may be involved, but is not necessarily. From the outside, a switch may in some cases look like a drastic mood swing, or sudden acute memory problems, or both, but the most common presentation is neither, and as such usually an outside observer won't be able to tell at all; most systems who switch have adapted to do so covertly.
