Splitting occurs in the moment when a singlet is divided into headmates and becomes a system (if they were originally a singlet, which not all systems are), or in any subsequent moment when a headmate divides into more than one other headmate.
A system's usual mechanism or outside cause of splitting is called its origin.
Sourced headmates might not experience their formation as being due to “splitting” per se.
