A part is a [[self]]. Calling a self a "part" carries a connotation that the self in question has become specialized for certain specific cognitive or emotional functions due to [[splitting]], and that the [[system]] cannot function as a [[gestalt]] without the part's cooperation.

===== Controversy =====

"Part" is terminology originating from the therapeutic model of internal family systems, which was implicated in the Alsana Castlewood tragedy. For this reason, even some systems who have headmates who //could// be called parts still choose not to use this word. Additionally, some headmates may feel the word "part" is dehumanizing.
