Blackouts are a feature of [[partitionary]] systems whereby [[switching]] is coordinated by causing the system to completely lose access to all memories of the [[headmate]] switching out and instead gain access to the memories of the [[headmate]] switching in. Thus, different headmates experience their respective consciousnesses as littered with sharp discontinuities, such as blinking and suddenly being in a different room.
